Hi Everyone,

I figured that because so many people are starting post-secondary in a few weeks I would share my tips on how to prepare for school. As a third-year university student, I follow these tips every year when I go back to school. If you will be returning in September like me, these tips are also for you!

Print Your Class Syllabus

A syllabus is an outline of what will be covered in the course. Most professors will post it on their course website within the week before school starts. Once this is posted, print it out and read through it to get familiar with the course. If any due dates are listed, put these in your planner so that they are all in there ahead of time. In the rare case the prof hasn't posted the syllabus before school starts, come to class prepared to take notes on what to expect for the semester.

Prepare Your Supplies

Go through all the school supplies that you currently have and then make a list of what you need to get for the school year. Once you have all your supplies for the year pack them into your backpack, so you are ready to go for the first day.

Find Your Classes & Explore Campus

Find out where your classes are located before your first day to relieve some of that first day stress! Once you've found out where your classes are, take some time to explore your campus and seek out some good study and hangout spots. If you'll be driving to school and your campus has multiple parking lots find the one closest to your classes so you don't have to walk too far to your car at the end of the day.

Establish A Routine

About a week or so before classes start is a great time to get back into your routine for school. Everyone's routine will be unique to themselves, but could include fixing their sleep schedule, meal prep to have food on hand at school, incorporating exercise into a busy schedule, etc. Once you've decided on what your routine will look like put it in your planner. I find it's much easier for you to hold yourself accountable once the plan is officially in there.

Some Self Care Tips!

Here are the things I do every year to help me control my first day nerves. Surprise! Third year students still get nervous about the year ahead, you're not alone with those feelings!

Get a good night's sleep

Getting a good sleep is essential to mental stability which is extremely important - and not only on the first day of class! If you have trouble getting to sleep, try drinking a cup of camomile tea and reading for 30-60 minutes before bed. This helps me get to sleep every single time.

Avoid caffeine

Caffeine can increase heart rate which leads to increased anxiety. I suggest staying away from it when you'll be going into high stress situations. Try replacing it with a caffeine free coffee or tea.

Practice yoga

Doing some light yoga before bed can help calm the body down from the day and relax, making it easier to fall asleep and get a good rest. I also like to do an energizing yoga routine in the morning to get me up and ready for the day ahead - but not everyone likes doing this so it's up to you!

Eat healthy

The best thing for your brain is to have a fulfilling and healthy breakfast. Try a smoothie, oatmeal, or peanut butter on toast with banana.

Think positive thoughts

As cliché as it is, think positive thoughts about your day. It's crazy how much your thoughts can impact your mood and expectations.
